tsuneflip: jump the cat, flip some tiles!

a one-week demo made for do you wanna jam? in august 2024. once again, made with keehar :)

this project was an attempt to improve our gamedev skills in a number of ways, very quickly. joining a rapid-fire game jam is a great way to do that, so we enrolled and got to work!

some key areas we were focused on:

there were a few main ways i felt my gamedev abilities improve greatly. one was applying software design principles; things like finite state machines, dependency injection & the strategy pattern were some ideas i had to learn more to use more practically and in quick succession. another was translating abstract gameplay ideas into code and data exchanges way more effectively and extensibly; things like our world, level, and playtime metadata storage, tile/grid structures, and how the player (and our unreleased npc objects) received input and moved in the level.

this also was another exercise in creating music that matches a mood, rather than attributing a mood or emotion to music i have made upon reflection. creating arcade-style music with my own spin was fun, and it only took me about an hour at the end to create the four pieces of audio used in the gameplay

that last realization was particularly rewarding for me. comparing my past ability, even from just a year ago, to the speed, focus, and relative skill for making music i had during this game jam, the amount of growth was very apparent to me. it made me happy :)

once again, thank you つねこ for playing our game! :)
