software raytracer, made using c++
a brief little outing into computer graphics, made by following the first two entries of the in one weekend series by peter shirley, trevor d black, and steve hollasch
there were two main goals i had for this project. one was to refamiliarize myself with c++ and get acquainted with some of its newer features, seeing as i had not done much development with it since college. the second was to learn the basics about one of the key fields underpinning game development, computer graphics
some stuff i learned or refreshed along the way:
- cmake and build systems
- smart pointers
- linear algebra
- how cameras, textures, lighting, and much more work
- well..... that i don't particularly like c++
to hit on that last point, yes, i found i don't quite like it much. maybe graphics is what will make me learn rust in the future... although i cannot say that's super high on my priorities either
despite rediscovering that c++ annoyed me, i also tried to learn a bit of opengl soon afterwards. i admittedly lost my steam due to a variety of reasons. and while graphics programming is most certainly cool, i had other things to focus on. maybe one day i will return to graphics programming a bit more in-depth and seriously, but in the moment it was right time to move on to different pursuits
